Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova was asked in her Nov. 7 press briefing about media reports that the U.S. is studying possible military operations and/or forcible regime change against Venezuela. U.S. officials have not confirmed these reports as official policy, she noted, and some denials have been heard. She then offered some advice. “Any escalation will only lead to greater problems…. This kind of direct aggression will lead to a worsening of the situation rather than to the resolution of those problematic issues that have every potential to be resolved through legal and diplomatic means within the legal framework.”
Recent history provides numerous examples of the United States claiming it is “on the verge of resolving a conflict or combatting a manifestation of global evil by force,” she added. Naming Iraq and Afghanistan, she pointed out the result “demonstrates that this approach of relying on force without an international legal mandate or authorization only leads to aggravation of the problems existing in the region.”
A cautionary note on Western intelligence-controlled media reports of how Russia is supporting or may militarily support Venezuela is in order. For example: On Nov. 8, Newsweek reported that “on Friday [Nov. 7], Moscow confirmed it would consider Caracas’s request for critical support—including repairs to Russian made fighter jets, upgrades to radar systems, and the delivery of missile units as Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro sounded the alarm over what he described as an escalating and imminent threat from the Trump administration.”
