African Union Commission Chairman Declares, There Is No Christian Genocide in Nigeria

Chairman of the African Union Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has issued a statement declaring that “There is no genocide in northern Nigeria,” which had been falsely claimed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Sputnik Africa carried Youssouf’s comments on Nov. 13: “We have issued a communiqué, making clear that what’s going on in the northern part of Nigeria has nothing to do with the kind of atrocities we see in Sudan or in some parts of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo,” Youssouf declared.

The terrorist group he was referring to in northern Nigeria is Boko Haram, which is killing Muslims and not Christians, the AU Commission chairperson said during a UN briefing on Nov. 12.

Youssouf added that labeling the situation as “genocide” oversimplifies a complex reality and risks being used unreasonably.
