The United States has threatened to cut intelligence sharing and weapons supplies for Ukraine to press it into agreeing to the framework of a U.S.-brokered peace deal, Reuters reported last night, citing two unnamed people “familiar with the matter.” The sources said that Kiev was under greater pressure from Washington than during any previous peace discussions, and that the U.S. wanted Ukraine to sign a framework of the deal by Nov. 27, Thanksgiving Day in the U.S.
“They want to stop the war and want Ukraine to pay the price,” one of the sources said.
Acting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke to both Vice President J.D. Vance and U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll for over an hour, BBC reported yesterday, telling the press afterwards that he “always respected Trump’s efforts to end the war.”
In his Friday address to the nation on Nov. 21, Zelenskyy sounded for all the world like a rejected lady of the night: Ukraine “might face a very difficult choice: either losing dignity, or risk losing a key partner,” adding that “today is one of the most difficult moments in our history.” He was quick to add: “We’re not making loud statements…. We’ll be calmly working with America and all the partners ... offering alternatives” to the proposed peace plan.
