Is 2026 the Year U.S. Long-Range Missiles Will Be Stationed in Germany?

Since there has been no indication that Germany and the United States will terminate a Biden-era bilateral agreement signed in 2024, it must be feared that the Americans will begin stationing long-range missile systems in Germany in 2026. This would feature Typhon missile systems with a range of up to 2,000 km, capable of striking deep inside Russia, including Moscow. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius signed an order for the Typhon during his July visit to the U.S., saying this system would bridge the seven years expected to develop a genuine European missile capacity.

To fill the gap, in 2025, Germany, France, Italy, and Poland launched a joint project called the European Long-Range Strike Approach (ELSA), meanwhile joined by Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. As part of ELSA, Germany and the United Kingdom are co-leading development of a “Deep Precision Strike Capability” that will have a range of “over 2,000 km.”

Coming in the framework of an unprecedented rearmament against Russia, the stationing of these missiles would make Europe, particularly Germany, a prime target of Russian strikes.
