Speaking ahead of the last European Union summit this year, to be held on Dec. 18, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever said his country is not the only one opposed to seizing Russian assets. While the warhawks are sure to press Belgium, the latter has given stiff conditions for releasing the funds, conditions he doubts they would accept.
“Many EU countries share Belgium’s position on the unacceptability of using Russian assets to finance Ukraine,” De Wever told Belgium’s VRT. He also doubted that a decision would be made at the Dec. 18 European Summit.
“The game has not been played yet. Belgium doesn’t have this in its DNA, like Hungary has. We do not intend to block the decision if everyone speaks out in support of it, but this is unlikely,” he said.
