U.S. Congressional Opposition to Venezuela Policy Mounts

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has become a strong opponent of any further moves toward war with Venezuela by the Trump Administration. On Dec. 1, Schumer gave a speech in the Senate in which he promised to evoke the War Powers Act should military action begin. “Should a strike occur, we will force a debate in Congress and force a vote to prevent U.S. troops from being in hostilities against Venezuela,” Schumer said. “Our troops’ safety and our national security are at stake.” Schumer is no paragon of virtue, but his raising of the issue is an important development.

Schumer also called on Republicans to back him, saying that Americans were “sick to their stomachs” at the thought of another war, reported Newsweek. “All it takes is one lapse in judgment from either side, and suddenly our troops could find themselves in an armed conflict with Venezuela,” Schumer said.
