EU’s Impotent Sanctions on the Last Drop of Russian Gas

In another act of self-sanctioning, the so-called “Trialogue” (EU Commission, EU Council, and EU Parliament) announced that it reached an agreement to end Russian gas imports by 2027. Despite sanctions, the EU imported almost €10 billion of gas from Russia in 2025. The new ruling says that long-term contracts for LNG will be banned from January 1, 2027, and those for pipeline gas from September 30 of the same year.

The ruling is not valid if gas storage is not on target and in case energy security of any country is threatened.

Immediately after the official announcement of the plan, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced that his country will challenge it at the European Court of Justice. “As soon as the RePowerEU plan is formally adopted,” Szijjarto posted on X, “we will immediately challenge it before the @EUCourtPress. Legal proceedings will start without delay. Preparatory work is already underway. We will do everything necessary to defend Hungary’s energy security.” The Guardian reported that Slovakia will join the challenge.
