The European Parliament voted on Dec. 17 on a bill calling for an even earlier exit from Russian gas imports than planned by the EU Commission. The bill passed in a vote of 500 to 120, with 32 abstentions.
“This is historic: the EU is taking a giant step towards a new era free of Russian gas and oil. … Our key priorities were to accelerate the timeline for banning pipeline gas as much as possible, prohibit long-term LNG contracts one year earlier than foreseen, and prevent circumvention of these new rules,” European Parliament Committee on Industry, Research and Energy member Ville Niinisto (Finland) said.
