According to a study by Germany’s Institut für Generationenforschung (Institute for Generation Research), 81% of the country’s Generation Z (born between 1995 and 2010) are not prepared to sacrifice themselves for their country’s war paranoia. The German government’s plan is to increase the size of the army (Bundeswehr) by 260,000 volunteers. If there are not enough volunteers, compulsory service could be instituted.
On Dec. 5, the day when the Parliament will decide on the military proposal, there will be demonstrations by students in many German cities. “We don’t want to end up as cannon fodder,” is the clear message one Instagram user posted, and called for a “school strike against compulsory military service.” “We will not stand by silently and watch as we and our friends are forced to kill and die by lottery,” the protest call states, reported Frankfurter Rundshau.
Thousands have already applied for status as conscientious objectors. The strike is being supported by the Linke and BSW opposition parties.
