Greek Farmers in Week-Long Tractor Protest

Since Dec. 1 Greek farmers throughout the country have been in full mobilization, deploying thousands of tractors blocking roads and highways. They will not stop their actions until their demands are met. Despite the poor weather that has caused serious flooding, the farmers are undeterred, and remain in a fighting mood. They have deployed over 6,000 tractors and have created 14 strategic roadblocks that have seriously affected transportation through the country, including the island of Crete.

The farmers have a long list of demands as they, like farmers in much of Europe, are facing an existential crisis. They are demanding overdue subsidies and compensation payments, lower production costs and greater support for livestock breeders hit by a recent smallpox outbreak that has decimated sheep and goat flocks.
