Greek farmers have decided to continue their nationwide protests amid tremendous popular support, as it is intersecting growing discontent with the government among the Greek population. A GPO poll revealed that an overwhelmingly large percentage, 85.1%, consider the demands of the farmers to be fair, while 64.8% believe the farmers’ form of mobilization is justified. Support for the ruling New Democracy party dipped to 23.7% while only 5.3% of the population felt the country was moving in the right direction.
Greek farmers agreed to escalate their roadblocks and other actions until their demands are met, following a nationwide meeting of farmers on Dec. 13 in the Greek city of Nice. This will be the third week of national actions including deploying 6,000 tractors carrying out roadblocks and other actions. The farmers answered Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis invitation to engage in a “dialogue” on their demands, by presenting a formal list of demands in writing, which they are insisting be met before any “dialogue” can take place.
