The Israel Defense Forces continue to engage in systematic demolitions of buildings in areas under its control in the Gaza Strip, even after the ceasefire went into effect on Oct. 15, recent satellite images show, reports Haaretz on Dec. 22.
Planet Labs, which carries out aerial photography of locations, presents images of eastern Gaza City and the Shujaiya neighborhood as they existed last week, and how they appeared several days just after the ceasefire went into effect. During these two months, it is apparent that the IDF deliberately flattened hundreds of buildings in just this area.
Several flattened areas cover dozens or hundreds of acres east of the Yellow Line, where the IDF forces are stationed: Some 1 million people used to live in areas now under IDF control. Haaretz reports: “These Gazans aren’t expected to be able to return to their homes anytime in the near future and will be forced to live in tents and temporary shelters. This is in addition to the hundreds of thousands of Gazans who continue living in displaced persons camps because their homes were destroyed.”
