In the midst of extremely high tensions between Japan and China after Japan’s threat of military action over Taiwan and promotion of NATO entry into Asia, a Japanese fishing boat entered the territorial waters of Senkaku Island (Diaoyu Island in China), contested territory between the two countries (and also by Taiwan). The Chinese Coast Guard drove the boat out, China reported, although Japan claimed that their Coast Guard intercepted and expelled the Chinese Coast Guard ships.
