Statement by Solidarité et Progrès, December 17, 2025: The terrible crisis caused by Contagious Nodular Dermatitis (CND), a virus currently affecting hundreds of cattle on more than a hundred farms, reveals the harmful and ultimate consequences of our submission to financial markets, which are willing to sacrifice both humans and animals to satisfy their predatory instincts.
The Causes of the Disaster
While the virus is endemic on other continents, and global trade has continued to grow, here at home, instead of developing an early warning system through regular testing, we have preferred, in order to save money and out of carelessness, to look the other way.
Although a vaccine against CND is available, recognized for its quality, safety, and effectiveness, we waited for the worst to happen before considering this solution.
Worsening the situation, the agro-industrial lobby, which thrives on exports, continues to oppose the vaccination of all 15 million of our cattle. Based on the standards of the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), it argues that a country that vaccinates against CND, a Category A disease, loses its “disease-free” status. Indeed, this change in status has considerable consequences for trade.
If our politicians do not negotiate direct bilateral agreements to secure our exports, widespread vaccination will cause a delay of at least 14 months, conditional on the cessation of vaccination and the absence of viral circulation before exports can resume. However, instead of slaughtering the “golden calf” of the sacred market, the government is bowing down to the detriment of our agriculture and those who make it happen.
