Michael Von Der Schulenburg: EU Sanctions on Baud, Others, a Return to Medieval Outlawry

EU sanctions are a return to the Middle Ages, Member of European Parliament Michael von der Schulenburg told an interviewer on Dec. 20.

Someone who has been sanctioned becomes basically an outlaw. We’re going back to the Middle Ages. Someone has been told that he or she has no rights anymore: no bank accounts, no work, no businesses. And there is essentially no way to mount a legal challenge to such a decision by the EU. As a foreign relations decision, such sanctions cannot be challenged in the European Court of Justice.
