Pope Leo Believes the Holy See Can Act To Advance Peace in Lebanon and Broader Region

During his press conference on the plane returning to Rome at the conclusion of his trip to Türkiye and Lebanon, Pope Leo XIV made some additional comments on the situation in Lebanon and the Middle East and what role the Holy See might play in advancing the cause of peace.

A Lebanese reporter mentioned that the Pontiff had said he had good relations with U.S. President Donald Trump and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and asked if the Pontiff could use those relations to raise the issue of stopping Israel’s aggression against Lebanon, and if the Holy Father thought “sustainable peace is possible in the region”? Pope Leo asserted that he believes sustainable peace is achievable in the region. “I think that when we talk about hope, when we talk about peace, when we look to the future, we do so because I believe it is possible that peace [can] once again come to the region and come to your country, Lebanon.”
