Taiwan Bans Popular Chinese Social Media Site

Taiwan’s Ministry of the Interior announced on Dec. 4 a one-year ban on Xiaohongshu, a popular Chinese social media platform known as “RedBook” in English. The app, which Taiwan authorities say is used by 3 million of its 24 million people, is accused of facilitating fraud and not responding to enforcement attempts. Whatever the merits of the fraud claims, the decision to shut down access to the app is seen by many as a political act.
