Türkiye Starts Construction on Somalia Space Port

During a joint press conference with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Istanbul on Dec. 30, in which he denounced the Israeli recognition of Somaliland, Türkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Türkiye will be establishing a space port in Somalia.

For his part, the Somali President said as Somalia faces threats to its territorial integrity and sovereignty, it has felt the support of Türkiye and the Turkish people.

In a separate statement to Türkiye’s Anadolu Agency on the same day, Türkiye’s Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır announced that Türkiye has begun the construction of a space port in Somalia following the completion of a feasibility study and design work.

Describing the details of the project, Kacır said the port is being built on land allocated to Türkiye in Somalia under a cooperation agreement signed between the two countries. He added that Somalia’s location, close to the Equator, is most advantageous for space launch. The project is being carried out under the direction of Türkiye’s Ministry of Industry and Technology and the Turkish Space Agency.
