Ukrainian, Polish Leaders Want U.S. Troops in Ukraine

Both Ukrainian acting president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk want U.S. troops in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy claimed he and Trump have been discussing deploying U.S. troops into Ukraine. A reporter asked Zelenskyy on Dec. 30 whether, as part of security guarantees, the United States plans to deploy its troops in Ukraine—along the line of demarcation or at the border. “To be honest, this can only be confirmed by the President of the United States of America,” he replied, reported Ukrinform. These are U.S. troops, and therefore it is America that makes such decisions. Of course, we are discussing this both with President Trump and with representatives of the Coalition [of the Willing].”

He added that Ukraine would like to see U.S. troops on its territory as a security guarantee, arguing that this would be a strong position in terms of security guarantees.

Tusk, speaking earlier in the day following a high-level meeting involving leaders from key European countries, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, claimed that the U.S. has declared it is ready to take part in postwar security guarantees for Ukraine, including the possible deployment of American troops, once a peace deal with Russia is reached.
