Corporate Insolvencies in Germany at 20-Year High

According to Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, the number of regular insolvencies filed with local courts in December was 15.2% higher than a year earlier. In November, the increase had been only 5.7%. Companies in the transport, hospitality, and construction sectors were particularly affected.

According to analyses by the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research in Halle (IWH), the number of corporate bankruptcies in 2025 rose to its highest level in 20 years. A few days ago, researchers put the figure at 17,604. Even during the financial crisis of 2009, the figure was around 5% lower, they said.
