The Defense Ministers of Germany and India signed a memorandum of understanding on deepened military cooperation at the start of a Jan. 12-13 trip to India, concluded by Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to Ahmedabad on Jan. 13.
No concrete contracts were disclosed, but there is an Indian interest to build six submarines in Mumbai, in collaboration with the German company Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). The project is worth around €8 billion. A formal agreement is expected in the foreseeable future, which could pave the way for further joint defense projects.
