The EU, which is famously disintegrating economically and politically, nonetheless was able to come together in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s intention to grab Greenland as a military base, against Russia and China in the Arctic. Poland, alongside Denmark, the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, made a joint statement on the Greenland issue.
The group argued that “security in the Arctic” must be “achieved collectively” by NATO while recognizing the U.S. as an “essential partner in this endeavor.” “Greenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland,” the statement reads.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also made a strong statement, in which he urged Trump to give up his “fantasies about annexation” and accused the U.S. of “completely and utterly unacceptable” rhetoric. “Enough is enough,” he said.
