To those hoping that the new year would bring some calm resolve to a world gripped by significant crises across the board—think again. 2026 has already opened with a literal bang, and promises to be even more tumultous than its predecessor.
Taking center stage in this is the major escalation between Ukraine and Russia. First off, Ukraine’s launching of nearly 100 drones at Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence on the evening of Dec. 29 brings the world back to the brink of potential armaggedon. “The implication of this is absolutely of the highest strategic importance,” Schiller Institute founder Helga Zepp-LaRouche said at a meeting of the International Peace Coalition on Jan. 2, “because if President Putin would have been there, would have been killed, the world would probably be in an open-ended spiral to World War III already.”
Former UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter has similarly noted that the Dec. 29 attack meets two of the criterion for the activation of Russia’s nuclear response doctrine, and it is impossible to believe that Ukraine didn’t have the active assistance from European nations. “Had the Ukrainian attack succeeded, Russia would have carried out massive nuclear retaliation against all of Europe,” Ritter wrote on Dec. 31.
But now it is reported that CIA chief John Ratcliffe told President Trump that the Russians are lying, and that Ukraine never attempted to attack the Putin’s residence. This is not only a clear attempt to derail the nascent diplomacy underway between the U.S. and Russia, cornering the president into unintended actions at the behest of those in the “intelligence community,” but it also introduces a dangerous distrust between between the two largest nuclear superpowers responsible for upholding world peace. Trump has therefore been put into a pickle, and must act to urgently clarify this matter if he is to avoid being pulled back into the worst days of the Biden Administration’s war drive against Russia.
This entire situation has been made even worse by the New Years Eve attack on a Russian cafe in Kherson, where Ukrainian drones killed at least 27 civilians and wounded many more. Russian officials have condemned the strike as a terrorist act and warned of significant retaliation, further pushing this conflict away from the prospect of a peaceful resolution.
Other crises are also beginning to worsen as can be seen around Iran, where a dangerous turn for the worse is taking place. Protests have erupted across the country due to anger at inflation, a situation which Western media and neocons are doing their utmost to fan the flames of and use to topple the government. Trump himself idiotically played into this, threatening on Jan. 2 that “the United States of America will come to [the] rescue” of the Iranian protesters if violence escalates. This is taking place on the heels of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s visit to the U.S., where he reportedly spoke to Trump about a new round of attacks on Iran.
If you combine these absolutely destructive developments at the hands of arrogant Western geopoliticians, with the fact that cryptocurrencies are crashing and the Fed was forced to make the largest injection of liquidity into the financial system using their emergency repo facility, then you can get a whiff of reality. In other words, the looming blowout of the Western financial system and the desperation to keep it afloat is at the center of today’s global situation, where the majority of the world is rejecting the old, bankrupt system of the modern-day colonialism and is pushing to create something new. These various processes are clashing, and can only continue in this current mode for so long before a resolution—of one way or the other—must happen.
Therefore, given such a situation, Helga Zepp-LaRouche proposed the following approach during her concluding remarks to Friday’s International Peace Coalition:
“If you think about the strategic situation from the top… if you think ‘Where are the forces of sanity? And how can we put these forces of sanity together?’ Well, what comes to mind naturally is the fact that the Global Governance Initiative, together with the Global Security Initiative coming from Xi Jinping, in my view is—from the government level—the only comprehensive strategic proposal for how to move to a new paradigm, and how to leave the logic of ‘mutually assured destruction’ and the present geopolitical confrontation, and how to go to the concept of what Xi Jinping otherwise calls ‘a community with a shared future for mankind,’ which is the concept of One Humanity First. So that for sure is an element.
“And then, as we’ve discussed in previous IPC meetings, the fact that Pope Leo XIV used his speech at the jubilee year to evoke the method of Nicholas of Kues and his ‘coincidence of opposites’... Nicholas of Cusa developed this idea that the ‘one’ is of a higher order than the ‘many’.... I have found that this method of thinking, of overcoming the Aristotelian conflicts on a lower level by establishiung the one concept which elevates the whole conflict to a different plane, is applicable to political applications… So what if we try to make a real serious effort to combine these two approaches—the Global Governance Initiative and the coincidence of opposites method mentioned by the Pope—and then we appeal to all of these followers of one or the other… because we have to catapult, in a seemingly hopeless situation, a mixture of forces together which has enough power to do exactly what we are calling for, namely, to put the idea of a new security and development architecture seriously on the table. And we have to somehow put together all the forces of goodwill… and that we really try to make that happen.”
