The mantra coming from Brussels and adopted by EU member countries to justify its pro-war policy has been that “Russia is the aggressor and Ukraine is the victim.” According to this logic, they should now acknowledge: “The U.S.A. is the aggressor and Venezuela is the victim.” But consistency does not belong to “EU values.” Rather, EU leaders performed linguistic contortions to justify the U.S. attack.
EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Kaja Kallas tweeted on Jan. 3: “I have spoken with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and our Ambassador in Caracas. The EU is closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela. The EU has repeatedly stated that Mr. Maduro lacks legitimacy and has defended a peaceful transition. Under all circumstances, the principles of international law and the UN Charter must be respected. We call for restraint. The safety of EU citizens in the country is our top priority.”
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for a “peaceful transition” in Venezuela, while not spending one word to condemn the aggressor. She tweeted: “Following very closely the situation in Venezuela. We stand by the people of Venezuela and support a peaceful and democratic transition. Any solution must respect international law and the UN Charter. With HRVP @kajakallas and in coordination with EU Member States, we are making sure that EU citizens in the country can count on our full support.”
