Kallas Argues To Do Away with Unanimous Decisions

Top EU diplomat Kaja Kallas, in pursuit of her democratic ideals, has proposed doing away with unanimous decisions concerning foreign and military decisions: “We should dare to also consider the Q-word. Meaning a gradual extension of qualified majority in Common Foreign and Security Policy. Unanimity means we cannot always act at the speed of relevance.” She made these remarks in her speech at the European Defense Agency’s annual conference on Jan. 28.

The issue of unanimity surfaced again earlier this week when Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that he would sue the EU over its plan to phase out Russian energy. The decision had been made earlier by the EU with a qualified majority, against Slovakia’s “no.” Fico said the decision was made only out of hatred of Russia. Even during the Cold War, energy was supplied to Europe, and gas through the Nord Stream pipeline was 30-50% cheaper than the U.S. LNG.
