Massive Anti-ICE Rallies in Thousand Cities and Towns across U.S.

In Minneapolis there has been a nearly constant presence of protesters since the Jan. 7 murder of Renee Nicole Good by ICE agent Jonathan Ross, but over the Jan. 10-11 weekend tens of thousands of people marched to the murder site as part of the more than 1,000 rallies planned nationwide. These “ICE Out for Good” national events were overwhelmingly peaceful, however, an estimated $6,000 of damages was caused, when a group of protesters tried to storm the Hilton Canopy Hotel in Minneapolis in the belief that ICE agents were living there during the enforcement surge. Minneapolis Police arrested 29 people at two such hotels. The Minneapolis protesters braved a bitter cold wind and snowy roads. Minneapolis protesters chanted, “No justice, no peace—get ICE off our streets,” and “Hey hey, ho ho, ICE has got to go!”

Speaking at a Jan. 10 press conference, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said that the demonstrations had remained mostly peaceful, and that anyone damaging property or engaging in unlawful activity would be arrested by police. The mayor said, “We will not counter Donald Trump’s chaos with our own brand of chaos. He wants us to take the bait.”
