On Friday, January 16, fifteen men and women soldiers from the German Armed Forces were deployed to Greenland as part of a reconnaissance mission led by Denmark in advance of a planned military exercise.
Several European NATO countries, including Finland, France, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden and the UK, have sent small contingents of troops to Greenland at Denmark’s request, primarily for joint military exercises like “Operation Arctic Endurance” to demonstrate collective security for the territory amidst rising tensions with the U.S. over Greenland’s future and increased Arctic strategic importance.
