U.S. Senate Votes Down War Powers Resolution After Tense Few Days

Last week, on Jan. 8, five Senate Republicans joined Democrats to pass an initial vote on a war powers resolution to halt any further unilateral military actions by the Trump Administration in Venezuela. U.S. President Donald Trump threw a fit, denouncing the five and saying they “should never be elected to office again.” Over the past week, these Senators have undoubtedly come under intense pressure, and when the resolution came up for a full Senate vote on Jan. 14, two of the Republicans, Sen. Josh Hawley (MS) and Sen. Todd Young (IN), voted against, leaving a tie-breaking vote to Vice President JD Vance, who voted against.

President Trump himself reportedly called some of the Senators ahead of the Jan. 14 vote, with The Hill even reporting that Trump’s conversation with Collins devolved into a “profanity-laced rant.”
