Slovakia Plans To Build a New Nuclear Power Plant Based on U.S. Technology

As Ostinsider Daily reported on Jan. 16, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico intends to sign a nuclear agreement during his meetings on Jan. 17 with U.S. President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago, Florida residence and in Washington. This was announced by the Slovak government according to APA.

The nuclear power plant is expected to cost around €13-€15 billion and will be built about 70 km from the Austrian border. “We want to work with American partners to build a new, huge block on the site of the existing nuclear power plant in Jaslovské Bohunice, which will be wholly owned by the state,” Fico explained in advance. The power plant will have a capacity of almost 1,200 MW, which is more than double the country’s current nuclear capacity. Fico will be accompanied on his trip to the U.S. by Minister of Economy Denisa Saková and Minister of Foreign Affairs Juraj Blanár. Fico will also meet with U.S. Energy Secretary Wright. The planned framework agreement also provides for training and research facilities linked to American technologies, which is a prerequisite for signing the contract with Westinghouse for the construction of the nuclear power plant. This could happen next year.
