Trump Demands $1 Billion to Keep Seats on Board of Peace

The Trump administration is asking countries to pay at least $1 billion for a permanent seat on a proposed new international body called the Board of Peace, according to a draft charter seen by Bloomberg.

President Donald Trump would serve as the board’s inaugural chairman and hold extensive powers over membership and decision-making. While votes would be decided by a majority of member states, all outcomes would still require the chairman’s (Trump’s) approval, the draft says. The chair’s powers include removing members (subject to a two-thirds veto) deciding who the next chairperson will be: “The Chairman shall at all times designate a successor for the role of Chairman,” says the draft reviewed by Bloomberg.

Membership would normally be limited to three-year terms, but the term limit would not apply to countries contributing more than $1 billion in cash within the first year of the charter taking effect.
