Trump claimed on Truth Social that during a “very productive meeting” with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, they “formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region.” He added that “if consummated,” it would be “a great one for the United States … and all NATO Nations,” and announced that he would pause the tariffs set to go into effect Feb. 1. “Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland,” he added. He named JD Vance, Marco Rubio, and Steve Witkoff to lead the negotiations.

(Mark Rutte’s position at NATO does not give him authority to speak on behalf of Denmark or Greenland.)

So far, no concrete details of any agreement have been confirmed. Danmarks Radio says that security and mining are reportedly included in the agreement, as well as increased NATO presence in the Arctic.
