In a long and disjointed speech delivered at the Davos World Economic Forum on Jan. 21—and punctuated by insulting tirades against various European countries and leaders—US President Donald Trump made quite clear that the Beast-Man foreign policy outlook of might makes right, recently demonstrated in US actions in Venezuela, and the fantasy of American dominance are his priority, international law be damned. Next target? Greenland.
Trump set the tone with an ideologically revealing statement regarding Venezuela—"Once the attack ended…they said, ‘Let’s make a deal.’ More people should do that."—and went on to push his case for why the US must possess Greenland and build the Golden Dome.
After ranting that the US was stupid for giving Greenland back to Denmark after holding the territory during World War II, Trump said, “Greenland is…sitting undefended in a key strategic location between the United States, Russia, and China. That’s exactly where it is, right smack in the middle…. You know, everyone talks about the minerals…. That’s not the reason we need it. We need it for strategic national security and international security. This enormous unsecured island is actually part of North America, on the northern frontier of the Western Hemisphere. That’s our territory. It is therefore a core national security interest of the United States of America….
