Venezuelan Government’s Outreach Continues to China, Russia, Brazil—and Others

The Venezuelan government evidently does not consider itself “run” by Washington, D.C.

“We held a cordial meeting with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Venezuela, Lan Hu, to whom we conveyed our sincere gratitude for his condemnation of the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, as well as the attacks against Venezuela,” Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodríguez posted on Instagram on Jan. 8. “We appreciate China’s firm and consistent position in strongly condemning this serious violation of international law and Venezuelan sovereignty.”

Asked at the Chinese Foreign Ministry press briefing on Jan. 9 about Rodríguez’s report, Spokeswoman Mao Ning confirmed again that “China attaches importance to its relations with Venezuela and maintains sound communication and cooperation with the Venezuelan government.” She added: “China, will continue to firmly support Venezuela in upholding its sovereignty, dignity, national security and lawful rights and interests. No matter what political changes may take place in Venezuela, it will not change China’s will of deepening practical cooperation in various fields with Venezuela and promoting common development.”
