Despite motion toward a new War Powers Resolution in the Congress, reports indicate that there are not enough votes for it to pass. Reps Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Ro Khanna (D-CA) introduced a bill in the House earlier this week to prevent President Trump from being able to launch a strike on Iran, rightfully claiming that the power to declare war lies solely with Congress. However, Axios reports that, besides Massie, no House Republicans have said they plan to support the resolution. In fact, Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), who supported the last war powers effort on Venezuela in January, told Axios he plans to vote against this one.
“Republicans are afraid of the president,” Massie told Axios. In the Senate, Sens. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.) introduced a WPA resolution on Jan. 29, but there doesn’t seem to be much activity otherwise.
