Caribbean Community Urged to Act Boldly in Cuba's Defense at Upcoming Summit

Several dailies from across the Caribbean region today offered broad coverage and support for the statement of seven former presidents and prime ministers of six nations urging next week’s summit of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in St. Kitts and Nevis to take a bold moral stance in defense of Cuba, now suffering an existential crisis as a result of the Trump administration’s barbaric oil blockade (see separate report).

The Jamaica Gleaner, Caribbean News, Stabroek News, NY Caribbean News, and Caribbean National Weekly were among those who favorably covered the former leaders’ statement but also gave voice to others demanding that CARICOM not cave into U.S. pressure on Cuba but act on the basis of moral principle.

[In its Feb. 17 edition,]( https://barbadostoday.bb/2026/02/17/caricom-urged-to-aid-cuba-amid-deepening-crisis/) Barbados Today included excerpts from the letter to its editor written by David Commissiong, Barbados’ ambassador to CARICOM, stating that Cuba’s dire humanitarian crisis demands a “significant and meaningful response from all people and governments of conscience.” Recalling Cuba’s “long-standing support to the region in medicine, education, sports, the arts, agriculture and disaster response,” Commissiong warned, “the time has come for us—the people and governments of CARICOM—to do our duty and help our Cuban sisters and brothers to make it through this severe existential crisis.”
