Cuban Artists and Writers Issue Global Appeal for Solidarity

In a statement issued Feb. 16, [published on the Cubarte website]( https://www.cubarte.cult.cu/periodico-cubarte/los-artistas-e-intelectuales-del-mundo/) the Cuban Union of Writers and Artists (UNEAC) has written a global appeal “to Artists and Intellectuals of the World” urging them to mobilize in “defense of the Cuban cause,” expressing confidence that in resisting the U.S.’s current “inhumane aggression” it can “count on the active solidarity of all honest, humanist men and women of good will around the world. It is a matter of preventing an act of genocide and saving a heroic people whose only `crime and threat’ has been to defend their sovereignty.”

UNEAC affirms that Cuba’s “greatness is in its people…We have developed human capital capable of shaping resilience through creativity and knowledge. Cuba does not promote terrorism, even though we have been victims of it. We love peace…We have always wanted to build a just and supportive society. We have eliminated illiteracy and reduced infant and maternal mortality to levels similar to those in the first world. We send doctors and teachers to other nations when others only drop bombs. We create vaccines that are distributed free of charge…We have an extensive system of free art schools, where dancers, actors, painters, filmmakers, musicians and many others from humble backgrounds have been trained, generating a powerful, internationally recognized artistic movement.”
