Cuban Foreign Minister Visits Allies China and Vietnam, Consults with Russia

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parilla was in Beijing on Feb. 4, welcomed by officials of the Chinese Communist Party and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, according to the China Global South Project. Referencing the Trump administration’s brutal oil embargo against Cuba, which is causing horrific suffering, Wang told his Cuban counterpart that China fully supports the Caribbean nation in safeguarding national sovereignty and security and “opposes unwarranted interference by external forces.” China is prepared, Wang said, “to continue offering our support and aid within our possibilities.”

Earlier this week, on Feb. 1, Rodrigeuz spoke by phone with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, who said that U.S. economic and military pressure on the island was “inadmissible,” particularly condemning the cut-off of oil shipments to Cuba. Russia, Lavrov said, would continue to provide Cuba with political and material support, according to the Foreign Ministry readout.
