Indonesia President Prabowo Subianto announced in January that his country has achieved self-sufficiency in rice in calendar year 2025, putting this success ahead of schedule by up to four years of reaching that goal. Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country, with 284 million people, for whom rice is the daily staple.
The government reported on Jan. 7 that the nation produced 34.71 million metric tons of rice in 2025, as against consumption for the year of 31.39 million tons, with zero rice imports. Contributing to the production were subsidies to farmers and support for modern farming methods. The government expressed commitment to continue these measures, so that 2025 is not anomalous.
