Even as U.S. and Iranian negotiators were engaged in indirect talks in Geneva, military tensions between the US and Iran were escalating.

Today, for the first time since the current escalation began, Iran announced the temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz for IRGC Navy exercises that began yesterday. It was not immediately clear if the strait had been closed, [reported AP](https://apnews.com/article/iran-us-nuclear-talks-iaea-dbed41b78ce2ddabc8a04349e72abeba ), but, it adds, such a rare, and perhaps unprecedented, move could further escalate tensions that threaten to ignite another war in the Middle East. Iran’s state media announced that Iranian forces had fired live missiles toward the strait and would close it for several hours for “safety and maritime concerns.”
