U.S. President Donald Trump and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke by phone on Feb. 2, with Trump lauding the talk, and claiming India has agreed to stop buying oil from Russia, and buy from the United States, and maybe Venezuela (with profits to the United States). Over the weekend, Trump already proclaimed that, “We’ve already made the deal … the concept of that deal,” as reported by Bloomberg on Feb. 1.
What will actually happen with India’s oil purchases, and the other measures, remains to be seen.
In the posting on TruthSocial today, Trump praised his talk with Modi, writing: “We spoke about many things, including Trade, and ending the War with Russia and Ukraine. He agreed to stop buying Russian Oil, and to buy much more from the United States and, potentially, Venezuela. This will help END THE WAR in Ukraine….” Trump played up that, “The Prime Minister also committed to ‘BUY AMERICAN,’ at a much higher level, in addition to over $500 BILLION DOLLARS of U.S. Energy, Technology, Agricultural, Coal, and many other products.” He pledged that the U.S. will reduce tariffs on imports from India from the 25% range down to 18%.
