Russian Officials Discuss Perspective for Next Tripartite Talks on Ukraine

Representatives of Russia, Ukraine and the United States are scheduled to meet in Geneva on Feb. 17 to continue the negotiating process on bringing an end to the Ukraine war. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin spoke to TASS about Russia’s thinking. He said that there has been some talk about the United Nations playing a role to temporarily govern Ukraine in order to hold elections there.

“The idea of introducing external governance in Ukraine under the auspices of the UN after the completion of the special military operation is not new,” Galuzin said. Such a step “would make it possible to hold democratic elections in Ukraine, bring to power a capable government with which a full-fledged peace treaty could be signed, along with legitimate documents on future interstate cooperation.”
