In his Feb. 14 interview with Bloomberg editor-in-chief John Mickelthwaite on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, published on the State Department website Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that Cuba could possibly find a way out of its current “dire” situation, if it would discuss changing its economic model and opt for “economic freedom.” That is, open it up to foreign looting, corporate “investment” and privatization.

Cuban leaders know nothing about economics, business or industry, he said, and have caused the current collapse solely because they refuse to consider “economic reform,” knowing they will lose power if they do. “So,” he proposed, “I think certainly their willingness to begin to make openings in this regard is one potential way forward.” Perhaps an “off ramp.”
