Xi and Trump Talk, Affirm Importance of US-China Relations

On Wednesday, Feb. 4, Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump held a phone call that Trump characterized as “excellent… It was a long and thorough call, where many important subjects were discussed,” including “Trade, Military, the April trip that I will be making to China (which I very much look forward to!), Taiwan, the War between Russia/Ukraine, the current situation with Iran, the purchase of Oil and Gas by China from the United States, the consideration by China of the purchase of additional Agricultural products…Airplane engine deliveries, and numerous other subjects, all very positive!”

Xinhua reports that Xi Jinping told Trump that he hopes the two leaders can steer the giant ship of China-US relations steadily forward through wind and storms, and accomplish more big things and good things. While the US and China each have their own concerns, if the two sides work in the same direction in the spirit of equality, respect and mutual benefit, we can surely find ways to address each other’s concerns, the president said. He called on the two countries to make 2026 a year to advance toward mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.

Xi also stressed the importance of the Taiwan issue for Chinese sovereignty, and Xinhua reports that Trump told the Chinese president that he understands how China feels about Taiwan.
