On March 6, the just-completed cargo ship Golden Voyage was launched on Lake Tanganyika. The 70-meter ship is the fourth of its kind to bring modern shipping to the lake for the first time in over a century.
Speaking at the launching, Krema Port Assistant Manager Anthony Poyo said that the ships will soon be transporting minerals, including lithium and copper, and will enable farmers to easily transport their produce to regional and international markets, creating jobs for Tanzanians. The ships will serve to increase trade among the lake’s riparian countries, including Tanzania, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In 2014, EIR published an article entitled “Integrating the Nile Basin With Modern Transport” (https://larouchepub.com/other/2014/4146nile_basin_transport.html), proposing to upgrade the East African lakes such as Lakes Tanganyika, Victoria, and Malawi, and rivers of the region for modern transportation. It made clear, among other things, that water transportation was largely underused.
