Greek Prime Minister Points to Revival of Nuclear Energy for Greece

Greece will be seriously considering the nuclear energy option,Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis declared in an address before the World Nuclear Energy Summit in Paris March 10, sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the French government.

The conference was addressed by French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and attended by representatives of 41 countries and numerous international organizations.

Mitsotakis said: “We cannot accomplish all the things we care about in Europe—strategic autonomy, economic competitiveness, decarbonization—without nuclear energy. Greece is also turning the page. It is time for my country to explore whether nuclear energy, and specifically small modular reactors, can play a role in the Greek energy system. We will set up a high-level ministerial committee to make a definite recommendation to the government on this front.” He added. “No matter how much we expand renewables, we will need long-term predictable baseload power. No technology can match what nuclear power can offer us.”
