An Iranian drone struck Britain’s RAF Akrotiri airbase on Cyprus, apparently hitting the runway. This is the first time in recent Middle East conflicts that Cyprus has come under direct attack. British Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper said the base remained operational and that the U.S. had not asked to use the base in its strikes against Iran.
The Cyprus Interior Ministry activated Civil Defense forces and opened emergency shelters on March 2. There are two RAF bases on the island: one on the Greek side and one on the Turkish side. Akrotiri is in the Greek zone. Both bases are British sovereign territory.
