Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, backed by Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, further blocked the €90 billion “loan” to Ukraine at the EU Council meeting on March 19. Despite pressures from the other EU members, Orbán did not flinch. We keep our veto, until Ukraine resumes oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline, he said.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz accused Orbán of displaying “An act of gross disloyalty,” but that they could not issue a “EU Statement” as such—only a statement that acknowledges the 25:2 ratio inside the Council.
