Protests have erupted in several countries against the attack on Iran by the U.S. and Israel:
Pakistan: Thousands have gathered across the country; crowds stormed the U.S. Consulate in Karachi. At least 10 died and dozens were injured in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, according to Summaiya Syed Tariq, a police surgeon at the city’s main government hospital, reported the New York Times. About a dozen more were killed in demonstrations in other provinces around U.S. Embassies.
Pakistan has one of the largest Shiite communities outside of Iran, with 15-20% of its 240 million people being Shiite Muslims. Adam Weinstein, the deputy director of the Middle East program at the Quincy Institute in Washington, noted that, “Pakistan’s military can suppress the protests, but the political cost of bear hugging President Trump is rising fast.”
