One of the documents signed by U.S. President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi during their March 19 meeting in Washington, was an attack on China in regard to Taiwan. The statement reads: “The two leaders committed to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait as an indispensable element of regional security and global prosperity, supported the peaceful resolution of cross-Strait issues through dialogue, and opposed any attempts to unilaterally change the status quo, including by force or coercion.” As China has repeatedly made clear, the country will be unified, either peacefully or, if necessary, by force. Takaichi has already caused a firestorm with China by earlier saying that a Chinese military move in the Taiwan Strait would provoke a Japanese military response.
China noted the threat in a release by the Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhu Fenglian, who responded yesterday: “The Democratic Progressive Party [DPP, the governing party in Taiwan] authorities’ attempt to split the country by relying on external forces is doomed to fail.”
