U.S. President Donald Trump is getting increasingly angry at U.S. allies, including NATO itself, for refusing to help the U.S. “secure” the Strait of Hormuz. “I am not surprised by their action, however, because I always considered NATO, where we spend Hundreds of Billions of Dollars per year protecting these same Countries, to be a one way street—We will protect them, but they will do nothing for us, in particular, in a time of need,” Trump said on Truth Social on March 17.

Trump continued to chastise allies in the Oval Office on Tuesday afternoon, March 17, telling reporters that “all of our NATO allies were very much in favor of what we did” before later refusing to assist the U.S. in its war against Iran, reported Politico. “All of the NATO allies agreed with us, but they don’t want to—despite the fact that we’ve helped them so much, we have thousands of soldiers in different countries all over the world—they don’t want to help us, which is amazing,” the President said.

“NATO is making a very foolish mistake,” he went on to say. “You would’ve thought that they would’ve said, ‘We’d love to send a couple of mine sweepers.’ It’s not a big deal. It doesn’t cost very much money. But they didn’t do that,” he said.

“I didn’t do a full court press because I think if I did, they probably” would have agreed to help, Trump claims, while again insisting that the U.S. doesn’t need NATO’s help anyway.
